RACING MOTOCROSS? HOW HARD CAN IT BE?!

Ok, Motoheads, it's almost time to head back to school and it's more than likely that your friends will ask you what you did over the summer.
You'll say something like, "I raced a lot."
"What kinda of racing?", they'll ask.
You say, "Motocross."
They'll say, "Oh, yeah, I have a dirt bike, too. I rode a lot this summer in my back yard. You should see the cool jumps I've got!".
Then, you'll roll your eyes and politely say, "No, I race Motocross. It's a competitive sport. It's takes a lot of training and hard work."
They'll say, "Yeah, so, what's the big deal? So, you race Motocross. What's with the training, ya know, the bike does all the work anyway, right!?" (snort, giggle)
So, how do you respond to this type of dialogue? Maybe this hasn't happened to you, yet. But, trust me, sooner or later you are going to run into some serious lack of understanding by those not involved in the sport of Motocross.
That's why we here at Kids In Xteme Sports really enjoyed a recent article in Racer X Illustrated by David Pingree (September Issue). He addresses this very topic. Even David Pingree hears comments like, "Why would you get tired racing motocross? All you do is sit on the seat and turn the gas thingy on the bars." As Pingree explains, "My stock response, after turning bright red like Ryan Villopoto's face after a long moto, was that Motocross is the most physically demanding sport in the world, aside from maybe World Cup Soccer. It requires the stamina of a Kenyan marathon runner, the agility of a Russian gymnast, the flexibility of a Chinese trapeze artist, the strength of a lumberjack and the testicles the size of cantaloupes (Sorry ladies of the WMA, but you know what I mean) There isn't an aspect of athletics that is left out in motocross; everything is required."
David Pingree has a great writing style that is hilarious and sarcastic. He's a retired Supercross and Motocross Pro Racer and has the sense of humor of a stand up comedian. If you can get your hands on a copy of the whole article, you'll enjoy it.
Meanwhile, if your friends still don't "get it", have them check out some of the videos here on Kids In Xtreme Sports, especially Ricky Carmichael's (on the video page) or as Pingree suggests, "Simply smile and walk away." and know that there are plenty of us who know exactly how hard racing motocross is and what it takes!
Safe racing...
Midway MX Park Race Blog

It was round #4 of the Midway Recreation Park's Survivor Series on Sunday, August 10th and there was some great racing to watch!
Supermini
The Supermini had Zack Williams, who is sporting the #38 on his smoking fast Suzuki, and KTM riders, John Tate, #229 and Kurtis Endres, #221 flying out in front of the pack of 85cc riders. Behind them was Cody Breeden, #850 on his Suzuki. Zack Williams took the lead and win in both motos. John Tate and Kurtis Endres mixed it up with Tate taking second in the first moto and Endres taking second in the second moto. That gave second overall to Kurtis Endres and third to John Tate.
85cc (9-11)
In the 85cc, ages 9-11, Adam Maxfield, #588 was really tearing it up out there with Henry Miller, #292 chasing him down. In both motos Maxfield had the lead with Miller behind him. In moto one, Tyler Gast, #100 ran in third with Cole Harrington, #391 in fourth. However, these boys changed it up in the second moto with Cole Harrington riding in third and Tyler Gast in fourth. Adam Maxfield took the win, Henry Miller second, Cole Harrington took third overall and Tyler Gast finished fourth overall.
PreMix (7-8)
The minis are amazing because they are so small and the track and the jumps are so big! Though all the classes did an awesome job, my focus this time around was on the Pre-Mix ages 7-8. Sterling Wold, #81 was wicked fast out there and has great form on the bike! Sterling took the lead with Payton Harrison, #32 hot on his tail. I can tell these guys have the racer mentality already, which in a nutshell means if someone is in front of them, they're going to chase them down until they catch `em! Payton Harrison was definately gunning for Sterling Wold. Meanwhile, Austin Griffin, #264 was racing in third with Fierce Knight, #40 in fourth. Fierce Knight was definately on the chase for Austin Griffin but ran out of time. In this moto, Wold took the win, Harrison, second, Griffin third and Knight, fourth.
In the second moto, Sterling Wold had the lead once again. But Payton Harrison was a man on a mission flying up the pack making some passes. Michael Quinn, #75 had the third position this time. Wold took the win in the moto and the overall win. Harrison took second in this moto and second overall. Austin Griffin took fourth in this moto, but third overall. Keep up the great racing guys!
250A
Minnesota's Trevor Tuma, #288 and Ronnie Goodwin, #711 of Las Vegas, Nevada put on quite a race for us on Sunday. It was fast action and great racing! In moto one of the 250A class, Ronnie Goodwin had the lead and Trevor Tuma was often literally on his rear tire! To watch these two going as fast as they were and hitting jumps and corners together was awesome! Something happened to Tuma because before I knew it Goodwin took the win and Tuma was "not" on his tail. In moto two, Tuma took the lead and the overall win.
Great Weekend at Midway MX

Another great race weekend! Kids In Xtreme Sports was at Midway MX Park in Kellogg, Minnesota. We lucked out with perfect race weather. Considering it is almost the middle of August, we could have had hot and steamy weather but instead it was about 80 degrees, sunny & breezy. Saturday night was perfect weather for sweatshirts and bonfires!
Sunday's race action was awesome. Wow, the 250A and 250B classes really put on a show for us. These guys are so much fun to watch - the fences were lined up when these guys hit the track. There were also some FAST kids in the mini classes showing us their skills on two wheels. Great racing everyone!

WORDS TO LIVE BY.......
By Team-Kixsquest | Mon Aug 04, 2008 at 03:25:49 PM EST
by Mary Maillette
I was flipping through the July issue of Racer X Illustrated and found the column called 2 Tribes. They interviewed Todd Jendro from Live Nation and Dave Prater, the director of Supercross. At the end they ask each one to answer the question, "Words To Live By?"
I really liked the answer Todd Jendro gave, so it's my quote for the day....
"Never give up. Give 100 percent. Follow your dreams. And after you've done all that, it is what it is."
CMJ Raceway, Hixton, WI (District 16 Motocross Race)
By Team-Kixsquest | Mon Aug 04, 2008 at 09:49:42 AM EST
Kids In Xtreme Sports was out at CMJ Raceway, Sunday, August 3rd for some MX action. This was our first time at this track and I have to say, it's pretty rustic. The fun part of going to a motocross track that you've never been to before is that you never know what to expect - from trying to find it, to parking, to the track itself. It's all part of the adventure and it's all part of the experience!
The entrance to CJM Raceway is nestled in the woods off a very narrow access road. Trailer and RV parking is limited to the top area inside the track gate. The track is located down in a little open valley and to get to the track there are very narrow trail roads through the woods. That's why there's an "Up Road" and a "Down Road" to the track and thank goodness no one mixed them up on Sunday, otherwise it could have gotten "ugly"!
Kids always find joy in the simplest things, like riding in the back of the pickup truck or "The Shuttle", as it was called, through the woods back and forth to the track. That and a snow cone was the highlight of my three year old's day!
The track itself is pretty sweet with a clay sand mix and a variety of different size doubles to make it interesting. It was dry but held up well throughout the day. This is a track that really brings meaning to the term "roost". On some of those turns, the roost was flying! Unfortunately, the race turnout was a little down, but overall it was a great day of racing!

Thank you so much for the pictures and letter. We received them yesterday and we were very touched by the thought.
The words of encouragement throughout this season was great. There were times we really did just want to throw the towel in, as we felt we were letting Ryan down. After races of tears, frustration and defeat, we finally started to get things to start falling into place. Even though most of our season was not as we hoped, Ryan pulled it off and finished an unbelievable last race and pulled off a top 10 win. Racing is really about sticking it out, racing to the checkered flag and understanding that life is about ups and downs.
Thank you again for your support. Keep up the great work and thank you for having an amazing website for Kids in Extreme Sports to show others what they are doing with their lives.
Jeremy, Sally and Ryan Anderson
